Realizar una captura de pantalla selectiva en Windows

In this tutorial, we will learn how to take a selective screenshot in Windows without the need to use third-party software, and without having to capture the entire visible screen content.

On more than one occasion, and quite likely, we will need to share what we see on the screen when working with our Windows operating system. Contrary to what we might think, it is not necessary to share the entire active screen at that moment. There is a method in Windows to capture the portion of the screen that we want.

For this, there is a keyboard shortcut that allows us to perform this action; the shortcut is as follows: Windows + Shift + S key combination.

After pressing this key combination, your computer screen will dim, and three options will appear at the top, corresponding to the 3 screenshot modes that Windows offers natively. These are as follows:

  1. Rectangular Clip: This method involves taking a screenshot by dragging the mouse to form a rectangle of the desired size.
  2. Freeform Clip: As the name suggests, this method allows you to capture a portion of the screen in a freeform shape. Simply click the left mouse button and drag to outline the desired shape. Once you release the button, the image will be automatically saved to the clipboard.
  3. Fullscreen Clip: This method, as its name describes, captures the entire active screen of your computer.

When a screenshot is taken using any of the three methods mentioned above, the image information is saved to the virtual memory of the Windows clipboard, and by using the key combination CTRL + V, you can paste the captured image into numerous applications: Paint, Photoshop, Illustrator, messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.

This is a very useful method for sharing or saving the information you are viewing on your Windows operating system screens.

Other methods to take screenshots in Windows

  • [Print Screen]: On English keyboards, this key often appears as [Print], [Prnt], or [Prnt Scrn] (short for "Print Screen"). Regardless of whether you are using one or multiple screens, pressing this key captures everything displayed on the screens in a single image.
  • [Alt] + [Print Screen]: If you want to capture only a specific window, you can use this key combination. The captured window will be the one that is active, meaning where the cursor is located.
  • [Fn] + [Print Screen]: On mobile devices like laptops, due to their more compact size compared to desktop computers, many keys have multiple functions to save space. On these portable devices, screenshots are taken by combining the [Print Screen] key with the [Fn] function key.
  • [Win] + [Print Screen]: In Windows 10, it is also possible to take screenshots more efficiently. If you use this key combination, the image will automatically be saved as a PNG file, typically located in "Libraries" > "Pictures" > "Screenshots". Additionally, Windows 10 assigns consecutive numbers to the images based on the order in which they are created. This key combination is also compatible with [Alt] and/or [Fn].
